How do Blocks Work?

While pain scientists don't know for sure, there are some good theories. Just like turning your computer off and on again does a reset, putting numbing medicine on nerves may do something similar. There may be a washout effect as well, by diluting pain inducing compounds from around an injured area. Injections can provide pain reduction by reducing swelling, and by bringing in more blood flow to injured areas.

Pain Blocks

Leading Pain Management Doctors

Sometimes the best option for pain relief is a pain block. The right pain block can reduce or even take away pain entirely. Pain blocks are usually injections of local anesthetic and a corticosteroid similar to cortisone. Injections can be done into muscles, near nerves, or into/along joints. Most pain blocks are performed by trained pain specialists such as anesthesiologists, who do similar pain blocks to numb patients for surgery. The most common pain blocks we do are Epidural steroid blocks, facet injections, trigger point injections, and nerve blocks. Click on the pictures below to learn more about pain.

Chronic Pain

If you live in the Orange County area, you can stop by our office in Newport Beach Fashion Island shopping center for a consultation or second opinion for your pain problem. However, don’t worry if you don’t live near us. You can send us your medical records for review. We can go over the records, talk to you on the phone and you can find out what our experts think about your unique pain problem. (Expect some limits due to not being able to examine you).

Pain Studies

Advanced Pain Therapy

At Newport Pain Management we may offer leading edge pain therapy in the form of scientific studies. Most commonly these involve a new pain drug or product designed to reduce pain or increase activity in pain sufferers. Usually, the studies are very selective in who is eligible to enroll, but the pain therapy may be free or you may even be paid for your participation.  You may drop out of a study at any time without penalty, and you will still receive your normal pain treatments.
