Our Approach to Pain

Newport Pain Management — H. Rand Scott, MD, Medical Director
Reviewed and updated July 2026

Our approach to pain rests on a simple conviction: pain is real, it is treatable, and no one should have to organize their life around it. Since 1996, we've treated chronic pain as a whole-person problem rather than a single signal to be silenced — and that philosophy, which was ahead of its time when the practice was founded, has since become the standard of care.

Pain is more than a signal

For a long time, medicine treated pain as a simple alarm: find the damaged part, fix it, and the pain resolves. That model works beautifully for a broken bone or an infection. But chronic pain doesn't obey it. In long-standing pain, the nervous system itself changes — it becomes sensitized, amplifying signals and sometimes generating pain with no injury left to find. Which is why chronic pain is real and measurable even when scans look normal, and why treatments aimed only at the original site so often fail.

That understanding shapes everything we do. We treat not just the pain signal but the sleep it steals, the mood it wears down, the movement it takes away, and the stress that feeds it — because those aren't side issues. In the nervous system, they are the pain.

A multimodal, non-opioid foundation

No single treatment cures chronic pain; the right combination manages it. We draw on the full modern toolbox and match it to your specific problem:

  • Interventional procedures — targeted injections, nerve blocks, radiofrequency ablation, and spinal cord stimulation that quiet pain at its source.
  • Non-opioid medications chosen for the job — nerve-pain medicines that calm sensitized nerves, anti-inflammatories, and others matched to the type of pain rather than its loudness.
  • Physical rehabilitation — because movement, paced correctly, is one of the most powerful pain treatments there is.
  • Mind-body techniques — biofeedback, relaxation training, and cognitive tools that interrupt the stress-and-pain cycle and are as legitimate as any injection.

Opioids have a place — in acute pain, after surgery, and in cancer pain. But for most chronic non-cancer pain, decades of evidence show that long-term opioids deliver diminishing relief with growing risk, and can even amplify pain over time. Our practice has been a national leader in non-opioid strategies and in helping patients safely move off regimens that no longer serve them. If that's your situation, know this: we will not judge you, and we will not abandon you.

Diagnosis first, always

The reason pain treatment fails most often is that it gets aimed at where it hurts instead of where the problem is — and in pain medicine, those are frequently not the same place. A careful history and physical examination, not just an image of the sore spot, is the foundation of everything that follows. Finding the true source is the diagnosis; everything after that is follow-through.

A partnership

Managing chronic pain is a job that can't be done in a handful of visits — it's ongoing, and it works best as a partnership. Our part is accurate diagnosis, skilled treatment, and honest guidance about what will and won't help. Your part is telling us what you're experiencing, what you've tried, and how treatments are working, and staying engaged with the plan. Together, that's what shrinks pain back down to one part of a fuller life.
